BHS Summer Reading Lists and Requirements

BATAVIA HIGH SCHOOL
ENGLISH SUMMER READING LISTS AND REQUIREMENTS

Educational research clearly indicates that students’ success in school is directly related to their reading ability. To continue the quality of education offered at Batavia High School and enhance our students’ skills, all students will participate in the mandatory summer reading program. The program is designed to challenge our students to apply, for enjoyment and enrichment, the reading and writing skills they have developed.

Students enrolled in English 9, CP English 9, English10, CP English 10, American Literature, CP American Literature, Senior Literature and CP World Literature must read one book from the list below. Students enrolled in Honors 9, Honors 10, and Honors American Literature most read the one required book and any one from the list that corresponds with their grade level. AP English Literature must read the four designated books.

All courses except AP English Literature must complete a reading log (format attached) due the first day of school. In addition, students must complete one project of the five possible and be ready to submit for evaluation the first full week of school

All students will be accountable for reading the novel(s) and completing the reading log and project. The grade they receive for their log and presentation activity will be averaged in their 1st quarter English grade. Any student enrolling from outside the district between August 1st and the end of the 1st quarter will have 30 days to complete the assignment. Any student whose 30 day timeline ends after the 1st quarter will receive an “I” (incomplete) for the 1st quarter grade.
