With their tour director, Gary Sroufe, and chaperones, Bryan Anstaett, Karen Baumann, and Cathy Crouch, the 33 students toured Monticello, the home of our third president, Thomas Jefferson, toured and ate lunch at Michie’s Tavern, and visited Ashlawn Highland, the home of our fifth president, James Monroe.
The June 2 evening activities included a picnic supper and a baseball game in Richmond, the home of the Flying Squirrels and their mascot “Nutzy.”
The second day found the students on an educational tour of Colonial Williamsburg where they saw the Capitol and Governor’s Palace, a millinery shop, wig maker, and blacksmith shop.
After lunch at Merchant’s Square, the tour continued with visits to Jamestown Settlement where they observed a replica of a Powhatan Native American village, Jamestown Fort, and boarded ships that were replicas of the Susan Constant and the Goodspeed. The next stop was Yorktown Victory Center and a Revolutionary War Military Encampment and a Colonial Farm.
The last tour was Presidents’ Park where the students engaged in learning about our country’s presidents through the outdoor display of 12 feet high busts of each of our nation’s leaders. At this site they also enjoyed a dinner buffet and topped of the evening with a show by a Colonial Magician, Harold Wood.
